Presentation

WELCOME to this International Early Music Course and Festival “Semitonía” in Cuenca, which will take place from the 9th to the 13th of July.

We present this Course together with the International Early Music Festival in Cuenca, which gives the teaching activity of the Course the possibility of continuing the work in the classrooms with concerts in different venues of the city of Cuenca, a World Heritage Site, thus becoming extensions of the classes themselves.

The course is given by a group of teachers of enormous prestige all over the world, who work in first class international teaching spaces. They are professionals who develop their careers combining their teaching work with the most important stages and festivals in the world.

Together with them, the Academy of Camerata Ars Summa will carry out the work of teaching coordination, as well as hosting for all active students or listeners, and for the public attending the concerts of the Festival.

We are waiting for you with open arms to continue making available all our resources, both musical and human, for the celebration of this exceptional event in which artistic education, high-level musical performance and cultural tourism are combined in a World Heritage City.

9 July from 5 to 6.30 p.m.

The main objective of this workshop is to provide students with the social and musical context of the cathedral’s musical life. To this end, a visit to the archives of the Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de Santa María y San Julián de Cuenca will be proposed in order to see the primary sources of the documents that musicologists study, as well as a visit to the Cathedral with a guide by the musicologist Javier Caruda Ortiz, a specialist in music in the Cathedral of Cuenca. The aim is to gain knowledge of the cathedral’s musical context from primary sources.

It will also be complemented by a lecture on 16th century music in Cuenca Cathedral by the aforementioned musicologist.

July 9 to 12 from 16:00 to 19:30

In this seminar we will approach the Ars Nova and early Renaissance polyphony preserved in Iberian archives. We will learn the rudiments of mensural notation, we will delve into the rules of contrapuntal and fictitious music in the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and we will contextualise it with works by international composers such as Guillaume de Machaut, Guillaume Dufay and Johannes Tapissier, among others.

This seminar is aimed at singers, instrumentalists (440hz) and already formed groups interested in approaching this unknown repertoire through chamber work. This course lasts 14 hours and is compatible with the rest of the Semitonía 2025 specialities.

About the teacher: Pablo F. Cantalapiedra is a researcher and musician focused on medieval repertoires. Since 2018 he has directed Timpanum and since 2022 he has been a member of Entrebescant, both groups specialising in medieval music. He is also a pre-doctoral researcher in Musicology (UCM). He has given concerts as a percussionist, flautist or singer with groups such as La Capilla Real de Madrid, Eduardo Paniagua, Magister Petrus, Opera Omnia, Serendipia, Camerata Antonio Soler, Ars Combinatoria or Flores de Mvsica in countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, Germany or Israel, among others.

11 de julio de 17 a 18:30 horas

This workshop will consist of the union of the specialities of Renaissance music and dance to perform Spanish dances from the 16th and 17th century in a total immersive experience for musicians and dancers.

The main objective is for the student to learn to play for dancers and vice versa, coordination, choice of dances, musical interpretation, etc.

It is a unique interdisciplinary opportunity to join and experience a dance of the Spanish Renaissance.

Del 9 al 11 de julio de 18:30 a 19:45 horas

The Baroque Zarzuela workshop consists of the performance of extracts from the zarzuela ‘La púrpura de la rosa’ by the Castilian-La Mancha composer Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco, with libretto by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, premiered in Lima in 1701.

A small stage set will be created so that the students can experience the realisation of a baroque opera project in their future as musicians specialising in early music. The first day will include music stand tests, rehearsals during workshop hours and a trip to Santa María de Campo Rus, the birthplace of the maestro de Capilla Carlos Patiño, for a rehearsal with an audience and a dress rehearsal. Dinner and travel to the village of Cuenca will be included.

It is a unique opportunity for the student to live the real experience of a great early music project with the reward of the public reception.

For children from 6 to 12 years old: from 9:30 am to 2 pm from 9 to 12 July.

The general objective of this workshop is to introduce children to the world of early music, encouraging their appreciation of different styles and periods, as well as the development of basic musical skills, promoting teamwork and creativity.

It will be aimed at children from 8 to 12 years old, for four days from 9 am to 2 pm.

We will deal with the different periods (medieval, renaissance and baroque) always in a practical and playful way (musicograms, dances, auditions, instrumentations, songs, rhythmic and musical games…), being able to discover the ancient instruments of that period live through the visit to the different instrumental classes of the course, as well as to participate in works that they will be able to perform with the musicians of the festival. Fun is guaranteed. Go to !!!!!.

*It is possible to take the workshops independently of the course. To do so, registration must be made on the same form as the course. Registration fee: 75€ for individual workshops, 90€ for Zarzuela Barroca and dance with minstrels, 120€ for introduction to early music. The workshops are free for those who register for the course (except for the ‘Introduction to early music’, which is aimed at children).
